Topological Obstructions to Certain Lie Group Actions on Manifolds
Given a smooth closed S1-manifold M , this article studies the extent to which certain numbers of the form (f∗ (x) · P · C) [M ] are determined by the fixed-point set MS 1 , where f : M → K (π1 (M) , 1) classifies the universal cover of M , x ∈ H∗ (π1 (M) ;Q), P is a polynomial in the Pontrjagin classes of M , and C is in the subalgebra of H∗ (M ;Q) generated by H2 (M ;Q). When MS 1 = ∅, variou...
متن کاملThe Diffeomorphism Group of a Lie Foliation
We explicitly compute the diffeomorphism group of several types of linear foliations (with dense leaves) on the torus T, n ≥ 2, namely codimension one foliations, flows, and the so-called nonquadratic foliations. We show in particular that non-quadratic foliations are rigid, in the sense that they do not admit transverse diffeomorphisms other than ±id and translations. The computation is an app...
متن کاملTwisted Actions and Obstructions in Group Cohomology
This article is intended to answer the question “Why do you guys always want to twist everything?” We review the various ways in which twists, twisted actions and twisted crossed products arise, and then discuss some cohomological obstructions to the existence and triviality of twisted actions. Our review begins with the classical problems of classifying group extensions and irreducible unitary...
متن کاملDesingularizing Compact Lie Group Actions
This note surveys the well-known structure of G-manifolds and summarizes parts of two papers that have not yet appeared: [4], joint with J. Brüning and F. W. Kamber, and [8], joint with I. Prokhorenkov. In particular, from a given manifold on which a compact Lie group acts smoothly, we construct a sequence of manifolds on which the same Lie group acts, but with fewer levels of singular strata. ...
متن کاملLie group actions on compact
Let G be a homotopically trivial and effective compact Lie group action on a compact manifold N of nonpositive curvature. Under certain assumptions on N we prove that if G has dimension equal to rank of Center π1(N), then G must be connected. Furthermore, if on N there exists a point having negative definite Ricci tensor, then we show that G is the trivial group.
